In 1791, Captain George Vancouver claimed the southern part of Western Australia for the British Crown. This strategic position led to the Princess Royal Fortress being built on Mt Adelaide in 1893 as the first Federal defence in Australia. The Princess Royal Battery currently functions as a tourist destination and provides an insight into the site and Australian military history generally.
