In 1791, Captain George Vancouver
claimed the southern part of Western Australia for the British Crown.
This strategic position led to the Princess Royal Fortress being
built on Mt Adelaide in 1893 as the first Federal defence in Australia.
The guns maintained their role as a deterrent until 1956 when the
Forts were closed.
